Why Fashion Can Be Therapeutic
Everybody likes to look their best. At least, hopefully everybody likes to look their best! Taking care of your appearance is a part of your personal sense of well being. Not everybody is a 'fashion victim', but most everybody gets up in the morning, has a shower, brushes their hair and puts on fresh, clean clothes.
The clothes anybody chooses to wear will reflect their mood, their lifestyle, their occupation and will reveal many things about their personality. If a woman chooses women's brown boots with platform heels, that is saying a lot about her. If she chooses to wear a pair of black pumps, that too tells a story.
Women have a far better understanding of the power of fashion than most men do. While a man may make a choice between two different pairs of shoes, the choice is usually limited to black or brown or the activity he is engaging in. Women, on the other hand, will change their entire look depending on the occasion, her mood on the day or the impression they're trying to make. They have an instinct about how fashion influences others in subconscious ways.
One of the most fascinating things about fashion is the fact that we don't always choose what we wear with a view to having it seen by others. Sometimes we buy something that we have no intention of ever letting anyone else see. Very conservative men have been caught out wearing outlandish underwear. Often a single woman will choose to sleep in some cozy Nautica sleepwear just because she likes it. Why is this done?
Many psychologists will say that it is therapeutic to have personal fashion. Not everyone is an extrovert, but everyone wants to express themself. If it just feels good to wear that silly looking pair of pajamas, then it was an investment well worth making, just as your investment in scrapbooking tools was worth it to you simply because you enjoy that hobby. You know you will never make any money at it, but you like it and that's enough.
We're so busy trying to impress others and make ends meet these days that we rarely indulge ourselves in anything frivolous. Once in awhile, we need to give ourselves a little treat.
That's not to say that you should go out and spend lavish amounts of money on yourself when you can't afford to. If you can't afford a new handbag, then get a new lipstick. If you want a pair of Mickey Mouse underwear, go ahead and buy them. Give yourself a break!
